The Lazarus Group, linked to North Korea, has been accused by the FBI of stealing $41M from the cryptocurrency-based sports betting platform Stake.com on September 4.
Lazarus is well-known for a string of worldwide virtual currency heists, having stolen over $200M in 2022 alone. Highlights in its list of hacks include thefts from Alphapo, CoinsPaid and Atomic Wallet.
The event has heightened cybersecurity fears among politicians from both parties in the United States. Legislators are attempting to tackle money laundering and "crypto-facilitated crime" via legislation such as the Crypto-Asset National Security Enhancement and Enforcement Act (CANSEE).
The FBI has previously warned crypto operators about potential large-scale cashouts by North Korean companies. The Lazarus Group, infamous for spearphishing tactics and harmful software, is considered a serious threat to international public safety and financial institutions.
