Proton, the Swiss privacy startup that created Proton Mail, has announced a new Bitcoin wallet. The wallet promotes security and convenience for its 100 million global account members.
This Bitcoin-only wallet supports "Bitcoin by email," which enables secure BTC transactions to any email address. It also supports address rotation to improve transaction secrecy. Self-custody ensures that users maintain control over their funds.
Proton has been actively testing the wallet with 100,000 pre-release customers since last summer. The company emphasizes its open-source nature, which enables tech-savvy people to check its claims. Proton teamed with Ramp to facilitate Bitcoin purchases in over 150 countries.
CEO Andy Yen emphasized Proton's longstanding support for Bitcoin. He described how Bitcoin became critical during their 2014 crowdfunding effort when PayPal momentarily suspended contributions. Yen emphasized the need for both financial freedom and privacy. The wallet promises to make it safer and easier for consumers to adopt alternative forms of money that are not dependent on centralized financial institutions.
Proton's entry into the cryptocurrency industry marks a big step forward, leveraging its reputation for security and privacy.
